What is microwave ?
A microwave is an electronic device that is used in the kitchen for the purpose to cook food. It is an electric oven that heats and cooks food by exposing it to electromagnetic radiation in the microwave frequency range. This induces polar molecules in the food to rotate and produce thermal energy in a process known as dielectric heating. Microwaves are popular for reheating previously cooked foods and cooking a variety of foods like cakes.
Microwave ovens have a limited role in the professional cooking because the boiling range temperatures of a microwave will not produce the flavorful reactions that frying, browning, or baking at a higher temperature will.
History of microwave
American engineer Percy Spencer credited for inventing the modern microwave after world war ll from radar technology developed during the war names as “Radarange”. It was first sold in the year 1946.
In 1955, Tappan introduced a home use microwave but it was too large and expensive for general home use. Sharp corporation introduced the first microwave oven with turntable in 1966. The countertop microwaves was introduced first by the Amana Corporation in 1967. After microwave become affordable for residential use in the 1970s, their use spread in commercial kitchens in the world.
A typical microwave oven consume more energy in standby power usage around the clock than it does on heating food.
Types of microwave oven
There are several types of microwaves are available in the market. Out of them are as below:-
1.Counter top microwaves
The simplest type of microwave location placement is putting on the counter. These are very compact and you can change the position for whatever purpose. These are not expensive hence affordable and easily available in the market.
2. Above the range
Microwaves as range hoods mounted above the stove is a great placement location because that’s often wasted space and the microwave ends up being eye level. The drawback of above range microwave is that they cost more money hence expensive.
3. Under counter
In this type microwave is placed under the counter top of the kitchen. I am not a fan of it because every time when you use your microwave you have to bend yourself to get at the level of microwave.
These days you can buy the microwaves with combined functions. Two most popular combo options are microwaves with convection and microwave with grill function. Both of these are explained below:-
1. Microwave with convection oven combo
After listening the convection there is a question arise in our mind that what is convection oven?
A convection oven cooks food faster because it blows hot air around the food. It includes a vent to vent air in and out. The air moving around the food speeds up cooking time. Convection ovens can decrease cooking time by 25%. However this can be an issue if recipes stipulate a set cooking time based on a traditional oven.
2. Microwave with Grill function
You can also buy microwaves that grill food. They come with a grill accessory. The grill enables you to heat and brown food quickly. You can grill food items like sandwich, chicken, rolls etc.
Steps to keep in mind before buying a microwave oven:-
We recommend some steps that should be kept in mind before buying a microwave oven. These are as follows:-
1. Consider size of microwave oven
Before buying a microwave you should consider the size of the oven you are going to buy. Whether it will fit in your kitchen space provided for oven. While considering the size of oven you should keep in mind following things:-
- Exterior size of microwave oven
- Interior size of microwave oven
- Capacity of microwave oven (It is measured in cubic meter)
- Diameter of turntable glass plate (Usually these are of 9 inches)
2. Check electricity consumption
Checking electricity consumption by the oven is compulsory because it will affect your electricity bill directly. In the earlier days microwaves usually used to consume a lot of energy. Now due to modern technology they consumes less electricity in comparison of before.
In India Bureau of Energy Efficiency is the organization who issues star ratings to the new appliances. These star rates from 1 to 5 in which 1 star for least efficiency and 5 for maximum efficiency. By these star ratings we can easily identify the efficiency of electric appliances. We would like to recommend you that you should go for the appliances who got 4 or 5 star ratings. In this you can a lot of electricity and can minimize your electricity bill.
3. Check warranty provided
Before buying a microwave oven you should check the warranty period provided by the brand. Warranty is very necessary. In case of any break down in device you can get it fix free of cost under warranty. You can also extend your warranty period by paying some extra pennies.
How to maintain your microwave oven
Microwave ovens have become those little boxes of joy and relief for the modern lifestyle.
People are busier, the stakes are higher, and the time is less.
With microwave oven convections offering functions like defrosting of food within seconds Or baking things with a touch of a button. It has become a top favourite amongst households all around the world.
But one real concern that a lot of regular users of the appliance have, is that they don’t serve for the time they are supposed to.
The service life of these microwave ovens is roughly 3-4 years. But most people complain that these ovens work with their full potential and efficiency only for 1-2 years.
So here we are providing you the few tips for the maintenance of your microwave:-
1. The correct placement
Many of us don’t bother thinking about this fact, but placing your oven in the right way matters a lot.
For starters, you could buy a oven stand or build a separate cabinet for a stable surface.
In that case, make sure you leave enough space on each side (approximately 3 inches) so that the heat generated from the microwave can subside easily.
The wires should also be put on the outer side through grommets to avoid any heat damage.
But make sure they are not stressed or pulled too much either.
Also, keep the appliance away from your gas stove, and/or kitchen sink, to avoid short circuits due to water splashes or excessive heat damage.
2. Avoid slamming the door
A lot of people end up slamming the doors of microwave oven convections.
We need to understand that it is rather a small door and it is not to be pushed as hard as a refrigerator, or a car door.
Slamming it hard can cause damage to the latches in the longer run.
This can also break one of the three edge-outs on the door, rendering the oven unfit for use eventually.
Because the safety function of these microwaves disallow them to operate at all if the door isn’t closed properly.
3. Keep your microwave clean
Cleaning your appliance once a week is a wonderful way of extending its overall service life.
This avoids the settlement of sediments deep down it’s motor and helps it work more efficiently too.
It is known that the little food and liquid splatters inside the oven can lead to more energy absorbing by the appliance.
Cleaning tips for microwave
Clean your microwave effectively within 10 minutes with these simple methods:
- Dip a soft cloth or sponge in a solution of soap water or liquid detergent and clean the microwave inside out.
